JEROME SALIOU
DAVID BOWIE
In Jerome Saliou's work, the figure of David Bowie emerges as a visual and symbolic core within a dense, rhythmic, and strongly layered composition. The face, recognizable but treated in an almost graphic manner, appears immersed in a vibrant pictorial field, populated by circular forms that resemble orbits, planets, or lights suspended in space. Bowie here is not just a subject, but the center of a visual system that alludes to cosmic, mental, and symbolic dimensions. From a formal point of view, Saliou adopts an instinctive and gestural painting style, built through chromatic overlays and quick marks. The color — intense, contrasting, often applied in a thick manner — becomes the true engine of the work, evoking the tradition of Abstract Expressionism and Action Painting, but also a pop sensitivity in the choice of bright tones and the centrality of the icon.
Bowie LIVE:
With this work, Jerome Saliou presents an image of David Bowie as a creative force in motion, pure energy that crosses different languages and makes them collide. The portrait does not seek to resemble or celebrate him, but captures the intensity of the musical and visual experience associated with Bowie. The composition is deliberately chaotic, lacking a stable center: the viewer’s gaze is forced to move, to follow broken trajectories, just like during a concert, where lights, sounds, and movements overlap. The painting thus becomes a physical, almost performative experience, rather than a simple representation.
